Tim, I believe that you are missing my
point:

>Many would gladly buy the book legally if it were
available and not even
>entertain buying an unauthorised copy, yet the
author neither makes the book
>available for sale from a third party, or
sells it himself or even puts it
>in the public domain - all of which
would take the market away from the copy
>guy.

What?!? Are you actually saying that the 'copy guy' has a right to
copy and sell someone else's work simply because the author doesn't want to
release it? The copy guy is selling someone else's property! He does NOT have
the right to market those goods, no matter what the author's reason for not
releasing them! I don't see how you can possibly justify your position.
It's like teaching our children "It's not right to steal...UNLESS it's
something you really want and the person who owns it won't give it to you."

No, I am not saying he has a right, what I'm
saying is there is clearly a demand for the book and the author (for whatever
reason) is choosing not to fulfil the demand, and also by making the book
available he would diminish the profits of the copy guy. People will steal if
they are that way inclined and there really is no stopping it, its not right
AND I AM NOT CONDONING IT but it happens, as the copyright owner its one
thing to be pissed that a product (music, words, whatever) that is readily
available through legal means is being exploited, its another to be pissed
that a work which is not available is being exploited WHEN YOU HAVE THE MEANS
TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT OTHER THAN PRECISELY NOTHING! "Spitting the dummy" is
not really going to achieve anything for the author other than affect his
future profits (through not releasing future works as was stated) WHERE IS THE
SENSE IN THAT??

WTF,
seems kind of a spoilt brat attitude to me, because even if there
>is
a reason why the author can't undertake the sales himself surely he could
>licence it to some third party, no?
>
>Maybe I am
missing something, I would be interested in hearing
other
>opinions.
>
>FF

Maybe the author is just too busy right now. Maybe he just wants to wait
a while. Maybe he's burned out and doesn't know what he wants to do. MAYBE
he's just tired of working really hard on something, just to see other people
copy it and sell it for their own profit. IT DOES NOT CHANGE THE FACT THAT NO
ONE BUT THE AUTHOR HAS A RIGHT TO SELL THIS MATERIAL.

Maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe. And so why not then
take action against this guy and slap it on ebay himself, christ the hard work
is done, sell it as an ebook, whatever, sure beats whingeing and doing sweet
FA.

Let's try to put the 'shoe on the other foot.' How would you feel if
you saw someone else selling (and profiting from) something you had
created? ESPECIALLY if you had copyrighted the work. Please don't tell me
"I would wish them well and let them do whatever they want with my work"
because we all know that's hogwash.

This has happened to me BIG TIME, no I did not
wish them well, but I tell you what I did not do, I didn't say "oh well fuck
it, my work has been bootlegged, I'm going to sell all my synths and give up"
because if I did the only person I'd be harming is me.
