A simpler approach would be to use the dedicated midi keyboard scanning chip that Maplin sell in the UK.
This chip only needs a clock, some scanning logic and a keyboard with DPST contacts and it will produce a serial midi output with velocity.

Maplin also sell a pcb for this.
Hi,

Recently there was a discussion about the home building of keyboards
on this list. Yesterday, I was cleaning up some paper stuff, since I'm
about to move to another house. Anyway, I found this article on the shelf,
started reading... and another evening had passed. :-)

The article was part of a series of articles about the home construction of
a MIDI keyboard, built around a 6502 cpu. It was published in a British
magazine called ETI (the full name was something with electronics and
telephony) in summer 1987. Unfortunately, I only have one issue: the June
1987 one.

This issue covers the hardware of the cpu board, MIDI interface and front
panel interface. Other issues must(?) have covered the assembly, keyboard
itself and software. The photograph in the article showed a really nice
looking 6 octave keyboard.

Does anyone remember this magazine?

See ya
