[sdiy] Lockout / DRM chips?

For now, I get that a lot of people are curious as to whether and
whence, but I'm specifically looking for advice on the utilization of
lockout chips, from people who have used lockout chips in their
designs. Can we please stick to that. Thanks. I am also specifically
asking to stop any conversation in this thread about the practical
implications for users, or your experiences in using devices that had
lockout chips in them, or the market economics, or general pop-infosec
advice and opinions. But feel free to start your own thread, which
I'll be glad to participate in! This list is for everyone. In fact I
wrote a bunch of replies to the messages posted above but I decided to
delete them to not derail this thread further.

Why do you think PUFs would not work in this situation?
Do you know of inexpensive chips that contain PUFs and are not compromised?
