I went through a few sets of magnifiers before I found one's that worked for me, now they are like second nature to wear. I started with good quality box style ones, they were OK but had to be adjusted quite often and they all seem to lack in the lighting (the first style below). The I got used to the open frame style and got some good ones with ultra bright LEDs, these are so comfortable that you dont need to lift them to see normally after a while (second style). There's also the new handheld digital microscopes that are really interesting.

I don’t think anyone does SMD soldering without some form (or, my case, forms) of magnification.
Well maybe I'm the exception? I have not found a comfortable and usable form of magnification for the soldering itself. Doing 0805 and soic I generally haven't had any trouble without, despite being very nearsighted all my life. I do have a headset magnifier and a desktop USB microscope but they're for inspection not soldering.
