I know exactly what you mean.
In my last year of school, 1979, an older guy whose band I played in got an SH-2.
Man this thing was from OUTER SPACE!! It could do ANYTHING!! etc etc ... made a huge impression.
The next year I'm at Uni and I hear "A Forest" by The Cure... incredibly moody synth line. I was told or I had read that the synth played was a Roland SH-09 (although digging around now, I can't verify that) so I just had to have one!!
Many years later I finally found one (it sits next to that SH-2 I managed to inherit...)
