I wondered: was this chosen for practical reasons, or does the temperature compensation (or expo conversion) work more accurately around the center-point of the 2164? The reason I ask is because I'd like to adapt this scheme to work with a unipolar CV coming from a MCU. I'm also wondering if I can drop VCA3, as high frequency compensation of non-temperature dependent effects can be entirely done inside the MCU. I noticed that the 2164 could operate at low supply voltage. But i interpreted the specs to mean you need at least a trickle of negative voltage to get the correct range out of this device. Adding just a smidge of negative voltage gives you impressive dynamic range. I was just wondering what to do with an old monosynth I built years ago, and consider taking it apart. After hearing your regrets I might not... It' the one on the top picture (it was never a commercial product, only the eurorack modules were): https://www.synthtopia.com/content/2015/12/28/new-dutch-synthesizer-boutique-river-creative-technology/ I remember building it, not feeling very convinced about my own skills in electronics, and deciding to stay safe by using Oakley sound modules for the main audio path and building the supporting functions from PCBs etched in my shared student-house kitchen. There's a gigantic ratsnest of wires inside to connect all modules and the entire patch panel. The keyboard is the cheapest I could find. I still feel grateful to Tony from Oakley for all the support in learning synth DIY. Over the last years I've been working on redesigning a new 'Ocean' with my own circuits from the ground up. Planning to share the designs when they're sufficiently debugged and sounding good. In the beforetime, I managed to have a handful of these boards and had no need for them. Since they were Motorola HC11 boards, and that was my MCU du jour at the time, I used them for other odd projects.? It's very easy to "turn up the speed" a bit for the communications with the voices while keeping the basic MIDI protocol or something very similar to it. You can have "external MIDI" coming in at 31.25Kbaud and "Internal MIDI" going to voices at a few hundred Kbaud with no problems at all.
