My point was that you don't need to do any of that stuff in a variable 
sanple-rate system. You just have one copy of the waveform's samples in 
memory and play them out at different sample rates depending on the 
required pitch. Yes, the sample rate varies over a wide range, and all 
of the images from the sampling process transpose up or down along the 
wanted pitch, but nothing ever aliases.
