It is indeed a temporary necessity - previously I've always had a vice available. For the record, I was able to do it with a carpenter's clamp, although you have to squeeze much harder than I thought. I suppose you don't get as much mechanical advantage as a vice.
I was making a Farnell order for other things anyway, so I've added a IDC crimp tool for the future (it was either that or buy a vice!). Thanks also for the pointer to the tool - I hadn't seen it before.
