It's all about getting the force applied evenly and steadily. Two flat pieces of wood and something that can slowly squeeze them together is all you need. Pliers, a vise, set on the bench and pushed down with a block of wood—all effective methods. At some point it will start to go in, move a short ways and then stop.

I picked up a proper crimp tool somewhere along the way and haven't needed it once since then.
