AFAIK the AS3397 is just an updated take on the CEM3396, which was designed
for building cheap MIDI polysynths, so optimised for processor control,
with timing pulses driving it's waveshaper to produce a DCO, and control
inputs optimised for driving off simple S&H - a 4051 and a handful of
caps.  Find the full 3396 data sheet, which is fairly comprehensive - it
even has a suggested circuit for a six voice polysynth.  I've seen a
shorter data sheet which is less helpful.

You can find a practical application of the CEM3396 in the Oberheim Matrix
6, Matrix 1000 and Cheetah MS-6 - schematics and/or service manuals for all
these are freely available.

I have seen a few posts on other forums about driving a 3396 off an Arduino
- might be worth a look.
