Yep, my first thought was to repurpose an existing DIY controller board
with MIDI UART and a 2x40 character LCD as a low level monitor.

But then I realized that it was about only 2 bytes, and I was able to
emulate the sender with a C test program on a PC to send abitrary
messages. 
So I programmed a message loop with a separator delay, and simply lugged
the chunky old Tektronix from storage. With just 2 bytes, you can greet
each bit with a personal handshake...
