Yes, I've been caught out by that before!  I hadn't realised that the 
running status interpretation was a driver level thing, rather than a 
MIDI-OX thing, but that makes sense.

One option I've used in the past was to connect an FTDI TTL to USB cable to 
the UART Tx or Rx pin (or an opto-coupler output) and bring the MIDI data 
into the computer on a USB virtual COM port set to 31250 baud.  Then you can 
view/capture the data using a terminal program of your choice like PuTTY, 
Termite, etc.  Then you see exactly what is on the cable.
