I'd recommend talking to Eric Barbour at Metasonix. He can tell you how "easy" it is. Very cynical but at least he doesn't beat around the bush.
How about cold cathode Nixie tubes to start out with? They're a tiny bit easier. Several people have done it and some are selling new ones with warranties. There are videos in the usual place.
