I've never heard anything of the sort in any of their music. OTOH, Murray insisted that Brian's voice be pitched up in "Caroline, No" because he didn't think it was high enough anymore. I'm sure they slowed the tape down.

The "Daisy" scene at the end has always left me wondering. It could have been done by speeding the tape up for recording and THEN pitching it down to a smaller degree, minimizing the warbling.

ZBS Foundation has used pitch transposers for their radio dramas since 1972. Warbling is considerable at lower pitches but that's part of the scene. I'm not quite sure when they switched to digital but it was probably immediately after the Harmonizer was introduced. They've always been on the cutting edge, so to speak.

Why wouldn't Kubrick's vision include audio? That production required three special effects crews working for the over two years on the visuals and none of the supervisors received an Oscar because the Academy rules didn't allow it.

I'm inclined to believe Wendy. This is the guy who had a modified Polaroid camera that he used to check the lighting of every shot. Boy, is the lighting beautiful in that film.

For a deep look into the production of 2001: A Space Odyssey, I highly recommend Cinema Tyler's videos:
