[sdiy] Frequency shifted from BBD?

Why not generate the clocks with the MCU and skip voltage control?
I just assumed Eventide used a digital pathway.
As a teenager I got one of those Radio Shack kits to build the SAD1024 BBD delay.
Got a nasty shock on the transformer, and then I was hooked.
I remember asking the electrical engineer at the college radio station what the parts of the circuit did.
He showed me the dual op amp that handled the active filtering. I wanted to disable the filters.
At that age, and to this day, I think lowpass filtering on the BBD really limits the fun. But I’m guessing the lowpass filtering is what guitarists call the “classic warm analog sound”.
(I then proceeded to blow out the op amp used to generate the LFO triangle wave, thinking it was the filter.)
Anyways… I have thought it would be fun to get a huge BBD with 4096+ stages and run it at a really high speed.
If I understand, there’s a problem with speed; the sample/hold cells have slew rate caused by their capacitance, right?
It seems like a lot of work to get a mid-quality sound.
