Yes absolutely - this happens to me constantly, and a few times a year I
end up repairing something immediately after a customer got it back from
some over confident/clueless tech who misdiagnosed or caused more problems.
Something I think has been overlooked in this thread so far is physical
damage. I think the majority of times I've seen shot transformers they've
also had some trauma, maybe while powered on. Can look totally fine until
you disassemble it and find out that some windings got damaged, or the
lead/terminal is broken beneath the film.
