It doesn't necesarily be customer's view, but maybe something another 
tech told him before. A real life example, although not synth related: 
my neighbours had problems with washing machine. First tech told them 
the motor is damaged and needs to be rewinded. The next one told them 
it's the control module to be replaced. Third one diagnosed it was burnt 
crimp terminal on one of the cables.
As an occasional synth tech myself I've heard many stories from 
customers telling me what was wrong with the synth (as they were told by 
previous repairmen) and that thing was never true after inspection.
