You're supposed to know more than just the basics before you start designing high performance audio mixers.   It's more of a top-down from the architecture book than a bottom up from 'what's a transistor do'.

That said, an awful lot of fresh graduates I interviewed after I replaced Douglas at Soundcraft didn't even know the basics !

The uninitiated do not.

Those are the people who want to learn.  That is why I express caution with the Self books.

The books contain information on what to do with it, not how it works.
