[sdiy] List settings change?

The various internet bodies created standards long ago for email, including various headers that mark replies with the message ID of previous messages. Email threads are built from a series of links between each message and the message that it's a reply to. Internet compliant email software (like Apple macOS Mail.app) will properly scan these headers and use them to correlate messages that belong together when viewed in thread mode.

This mailing list is handled by mailman software, so it surely implements all appropriate internet standards.

My understanding is that Google decided to toss all of those internet standards and devise their own methods for relating messages in a thread. Then, they were arrogant enough to suggest that their conventions be taken as standard instead of the long-standing established ones. My information is a decade or more out of date, so I'm not sure whether Google learned their lesson and finally adopted the internet standards, or not. I don't use Gmail, so I stopped arguing about such things with the Google engineers. i.e. It's possible the Gmail is the problem.

Bottom line: You might want to switch to a more standards-based email reader if you want compatibility with the rest of the world. I see that other gmail users are not sharing your problem, so maybe they can share whether they're using the web-based gmail or an independent application.
