You could try something like this

You'd need to get the LED current in a range where the MOSFETs weren't saturated, and I've no idea how wide a range that is, but it's bi-directional so you wouldn't need the diode bridge.

Is there any device that could replace a slow responding LED/LDR combo ?
I was thinking of this LED/photo transistor/bridge replacement..
The only thing to be carefull about would be the diodes voltage drops,
But using very low current that voltage drop could be very low..
