SMPTE is a bit more elaborate than just FSK. It is designed to operate across a wide range of analog playback speeds, including in reverse. Few signaling standards tolerate variable (clock) speed (or variable frequency), much less are readable in reverse; but this is appropriate for synchronizing more than one tape transport given that it is common to operate the playback system in both directions and at slower- or faster-than-normal playback.
As impressive as SMPTE was in its day, there have apparently been advancements made in similar technology for tracking vinyl for digital DJ systems.
