I went to look that up to see what they've done. There's a schematic for the first version linked in this thread:

It uses an unusual Mitsubishi chip, the M5206, which I haven't seen anywhere else, and which I can't find a datasheet for. From the Dunlop schematic it looks like some sort of voltage-controlled pot, but that might be only how they have it displayed.
