THAT Corp actually visited Mackie design headquarters in Woodinville to congratulate the designers of the DL32R preset-recallable microphone preamps. THAT Corp had published a reference circuit for their chips that optimized certain aspects, but with tradeoffs. Mackie circuit design engineers managed to solve some of the tradeoffs without sacrificing performance drastically.

My point in sharing this story is that even when you're dealing with a chip that's designed to be controllable, there are still possible variations in the surrounding circuitry that can affect the sound.
