As a controlled experiment to prove absolutely if there was any difference
between saw and ramp, I used a signal generator on my phone ( Samsung A15 )
to generate a 441Hz saw.
I positioned myself exactly 1 metre away from the sound source and listened
*very* carefully for 10 minutes.
I then suspended myself hanging from a bar by the knees. I checked using a
little plastic protractor that i was exactly 180 degrees inverted.
I needed to hang there for about 15 minutes with my eyes closed to overcome
the disorientation.
Around the 10 minute mark, I'd lost feeling in my lower legs but the
discomfort was worth it to advance the science. Did Newton complain about a
bruised forehead? I don't think so.
Finally, I was able to concentrate on listening to the 441 Hz saw which, by
inversion, is now obviously a ramp.
I can now give an absolute, definitive answer to the the discussion and it
is as follows:
"Yea, they're about the same"

It looks pretty much like a sinewave, but still has all the harmonics and
the timbre of a triangle. That's pretty cool. Another example of
substantially different looking waveforms with the same sound. Also goes to
show that what initially *looks* like a decent sinewave can actually have
quite high distortion!

saw/sqr/tri/sin and get all their overtone phases to match. But the triangle
becomes a nice almost-half-circular waveform if you align them!
