If you take a PS2 Mouse then there are Arduino libraries for this type that make it easy to work with...

The surface I'm reading the moving speed of is paper.

Yes, a mouse optical sensor could be Ok.
I will have to find a way to read the actual X-Y 'steps' on the inner micro though..
Just want one of these.
But I don't want to get into the USB protocol to find these X-Y values..
Your suggestion is very promissing..
