Good question! Not very linear.

Nonlinear enough that you can make music with the intermodulation distortion products.

I heard an impressive demo at Stanford's CCRMA a while ago where Alex Chechile created a piece of music with notes were never actually played, but where created in the intermodulation distortion products inside the ear.
