Ha ha exactly! 
"Makes sense on paper" doesn't it...
but the "lossy" use of these things just adds to their character, musically, of course

(e.g. the S612 has this fabulous function they call "Overdub" where you can record a new sample over the previous one... ad infinitum.. with the sampler making adjustments to the gain each time to compensate... )
