You're right, except whip aerial at 1MHz-ish would be about 75m long, which might be impractical for portable use.

The coil in the oscillator is going to radiate far more than any reasonable-sized whip. Something like 10mW ERP is pretty attainable with that and would probably transmit over a distance of a couple of hundred metres.
