I guess it depends upon what part of the hardware you're considering.

When addressing memory, it's advantageous to use powers of two because address decoders can be designed for any number of input bits, but always have a power of two outputs (unless you throw some away).

On the other hand, a silicon die is only so big, so perhaps there are cases where a non-power-of-two might make the most sense, given all of the tradeoffs.

p.s. Sub-oscillators always favor powers of two, because they shift down an octave.
