Here's an idea: use an SBC in raspberry pi format that simply runs a
UI, and has hdmi out for a proper monitor rather than this 1" oled
bullshit that no one can read without a microscope. The SBC format
will allow it to be replaced should it fail. I don't know why
manufacturers aren't doing this - HDMI output is clearly superior to
trying to read fonts that are 2mm tall. pi alternatives are abundant
and can be had cheaply. It doesn't have to be an original pi, and even
if those are scarce, honestly running a user interface should be
running most of those boards idle.

Given how much dev time is spent on firmwares trying to do those crazy
UIs, and how much modules cost anyways, this sort of thing can be
pretty economical: an orange pi zero can be had for 25 euro, right
now, today, during times of scarcity. As long as the software is open
source and can be run on other SBCs, things should be fine.

Perhaps it would make sense for people in the synth dev / diy
community to come together and write a simple UI lib that allows you
to show stuff on screen and communicate with other components via a
standardized digital bus. Synths really need to break out of the
antiquated tiny lcd screen paradigm, it's always been sad to look at
but it's becoming more and more difficult to rationalize away.
