I remember being demo'ed a cheap-ish build of something resembling a
commercial fum extractor of this form:
- box of plywood of adequate size.
- angled back wall with two PC case fans in them or similar, pushing air
outwards
- and a layer of .. active coal or what's it called, as a filter
- on the top of the box is an anti-static mat, somwhow fixed to it
- in the whole top plate of the box, incl the mat, two slits, one near
the back, one near the front of the top, of ~ 2cm (?) width, each going
from left to right end, had been milled
- the PCB to be soldered would be put in the middle, between those slits
- the fans, causing suction close to those slits, would suck the fumes away
- there was a speed control box moutned on the side of the box, with a
potentiometer to adjust fan speed i.e. degree of suction
This worked nicely.
Hah, whaddayaknow, I found photos of it:

I don't have info on the speed controller.
But I'm pretty sure this is cheaper than a comparable commercial product.
