I make boards with both surface mount and through hole. For me the
assembly time by hand is pretty much the same in each case.
Surface mount uses less solder and generally less waste. I generally
prefer to solder surface mount. However, for prototyping I still use
strip board with through hole parts.
Anyone who is soldering through hole components on large PCBs really
should be using an assembly jig. For example:

It makes the whole job go a lot quicker.
BTW: The Fender Rumble amplifier that was referenced in the original
post has surface mount PCBs including the LM13700.
