I've noticed a gradual trend towards increasing MOQs at the smaller suppliers like Farnell/Newark, RS, Digikey, Mouser recently. Unfortunately that's not good news for the smaller hobby builder who doesn't want to commit a few hundred pounds on a reel of a few thousand parts. I guess that leaves the murky waters of eBay for picking up smaller quantities.

Re the original question as to why Fender designed in an obsolete DIP OTA, I'd imagine the answer is either that they already had substantial stock of these chips, or that they took advantage of a last time buy at a good price.
