I think if a part ever does go SMD only, then if there's enough hobbyist demand for that part in DIP, someone here could get a batch of snap-off PCBs made with a small enough version (QFN) of the SMD chip and pins already soldered on at JLCPCB and sell on their website.  A couple of places are doing that with the RaspberryPi RP2040  MCU which is a lot more pins.
