I have no reason to doubt your statement, but...
Considering that I purchased my EPS new in 1988, I'm not exactly disappointed that some oxidization (or whatever happens to old socketed chips) had to be broken free after three decades. I didn't think I was buying military-grade equipment, and even military-grade equipment requires frequent maintenance for continued reliability.
At least it's not like the Apple /// ... where chips literally fell out of their sockets and the product stopped working.
