I don't see why not. Just have two drivers capable of positive and negative output with current limiters and a voltage measurement. Try both. Either 0.7V or 5V is the wrong way around, 2-3V is the correct way.

yes, but does not help if the user picks a random dongle or uses a TRS cable to go into the next module with unknown polarity...
so you always need a setting and the module has very little UI for that, thus we opted for the "silk screen" setting :)
