[sdiy] PAiA Gnome repair

That’s… not a terrible idea. ;)
The best things (IMHO) about the Gnome were the PWM sound (although you had
to do it manually) and the EG repeat function. Emulate those and you’re a
good part of the way there. The other trick will be to get the ribbon to
work. A modern resistor strip will work better, I think. I know it’s a
deviation from the original, but what I would do is replace the ribbon with
9 pots (no knobs) to make a mini sequencer. One pot is clock speed, and the
other 8 are the notes. Turning a pot all the way up would set the end of
the sequence.
On a side note, I always thought it would be fun to design a Gnome-like
mini-synth based on a single 2164. Use one section for a VCO, two for a
12db SVF, and the last section for the VCA. You’d want the VCA EG to be
linear to work with the expo response of the 2164. You’d also need a
handful of op-amps. I went so far as to design some pretty good
euro-compatible panel layouts. Someone with more talent and time than I
should do something like this. More capabilities than the Gnome, but still
similar in spirit.
Anyway, I think you’ve got an interesting project going there. A Gnome case
with a decent sounding synth beneath it would be fun thing to see.
