Here's the thing. How things sound are processed by your auditory cortex which is part of your temporal lobe.
Just as you fall asleep, your temporal lobe goes *apeshit* for a minute or so. Most people perceive that as music. If you've ever heard incredible music that you can't quite remember just as you're falling asleep, that's your temporal lobe spiking and glitching a bit.
I strongly recommend reading Oliver Sacks' "The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat", in which (among other fascinating things) he discusses two patients who suffered various forms of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, causing them to hallucinate music - in one case, songs she hadn't heard since she was a very young child.
