The trouble arises when you add a new module to an existing system. Suddenly something else does not work and it's the "new guys" fault... even if the real root cause is that
the old module was improperly designed. Now a manufacturer gets all these complaints, bad reviews, warranty returns...
The Zener shunt regulator has its place. It can be a power-hungry pig (suppose you feed +/-15 to a module designed for +/-12). But it is robust and reliable.
The 78xx regulator is another story. Maybe the module manufacturer should have designed in voltage references instead of trying to clean up a customer's noisy supply.
I had a lot of trouble with some Aries modules back in the day that had noise issues which I traced to the "metal shells" on the trimpots. Only years later did I find out the
real culprit was the crappy linear power supply I designed that let the noise be present in the first place. Adding capacitive decoupling to those trimpots fixed it... but the root cause was
my high-ripple power supply... and Aries' choice to source critical bias points from the power supply rails.
Voltage references, anyone?
The modular is a system and the user has to be a system integrator and deal with everyone else's bad design choices.

When this topic comes up I always think of the design of a hard disk and how well they work given some of the cheap pc supplies out there. There must be experiences some of you have where you first had issues with an SMPS but resolved them by using different magnetics, shielding, ferrites, higher frequency SMPS, or?
