And usually when using a wedge monitor followed seconds later by howl-round :-)

You do get a bit of extra feedback suppression with the audience there compared with the earlier soundcheck, but you were usually right on the limit for singers who did want to hear themselves in the old days.  When it was introduced, the JBL Feedback Suppressor gave a bit (5 dB?) more margin, but some people claimed it affected the sound more than it actually did.
