Finally someone understands what I meant hidden below my swashbuckling 
rants. (regarding Behringer)

What you describe now (4-16 universal inputs, 1-4 outputs) looks like 
you could make a module shield for iPhone, just add ADCs and DACs, and 
the phone will serve as functionality workhorse. Then the cost of 
ADC/DAC will not mater compared to the iPhone.
When I see "5000 DACs" it all starts to look like academic theoretical 
discussion (always fun and educaative) that may never realize in hardware.

BTW, this thread made me look differently on everyday life objects. For 
example typical TV screen might be considered as an array of 6 milion DACs.
