I have driven a Peugeot 205GTi and it could certainly accelerate far more quickly than it could stop. I also drove the similarly-engined and similar weight to the 309 Citroën BX 19GTi but with its fully-powered braking system driven off the same coffee-mug-sized pump as the hydraulic suspension, a very hard stop felt like it would alter the rotation of the Earth.
The much heavier and larger Citroën CX could - if you buried the brake pedal hard - stop from 60mph in rather less than 100 feet, less than half what's printed in the back of the Highway Code, but doing so left you feeling like you'd been in one of those centrifuges they stress test astronauts with. Far better than hitting the kid that chased the ball out onto the road though!
