[sdiy] DIP LM13700 discontinuation

The thing is we almost reached the theoretical noise floors in the early 90s, and have had more than adequate distortion figures since the 80s, so there's really nowhere much else to go in analogue audio mixer design. Digital mixers added a bit of fun getting the A-D conversion done but that's now near perfect as well so really mixer design is now all about lowering cost or improving the human interface, preferably both.

I was just about to post the same thing! I was amazed to see that this is still the case after seeing those exact chips used in mixers 30 years ago!

Bearing in mind the rate of change in the electronics industry, it's worth acknowledging that this has been the case for 30 YEARS or more! I was working on broadcast mixers back in the early '90s and the opamp lineup was exactly the same. Those devices just tick most if not all the boxes for a wide range of audio applications, and the multiple sources and ubiquity they have built up helps prolong the situation.
Yes, there are modern alternatives but the improvements are usually marginal and often offset by cost or single-sourcing. The NE5532 shows its age a bit with its power consumption and tendency to go unstable without some decoupling caps nearby to keep it company and I admit I tend to use the MC33178 in that position now, but the TL07x is still a go-to device.
Cheers,
