One thing that companies like Advanced Circuits / 4PCB do is offer an online Gerber check service. You can submit Gerbers from any tool to FreeDFM.com and get a detailed report of any issues. I think it might only show four problems, max, but I typically have zero problems. If you have more than four issues, then just fix the first four and iterate until everything is fine.

An advantage of having this online is that it doesn't matter whether you're on Windows, Mac, or Linux. Just upload the files and get an email report later.

Advanced Circuits is not often the cheapest, but I've received very high quality boards from them. They also do assembly, now, but I've not used their service for that.
