Not necessarily, perhaps? If it's still a linear (enough) system, shouldn't
it be possible to create the polyphonic gated reverb by taking a regular
reverb and subtracting another partly identical reverb that is set up to
calculate the "error signal" so to speak? Similar to how a compressor/gate
can be done by letting the original signal through and subtracting an
inverse copy of the signal with the appropriate envelopes and levels.
Probably tricky to expand to a reverb, but why else would it be worthwhile
trying?  (-:
