Actually it didn't work even for telecoms.  The MTBF of digitally controlled analogue switched systems such as the TXE4 was almost so bad that you needed 24/7 engineer coverage for each one.  The push to go digital wasn't to improve the voice quality, as nobody cared about that back then, but simply to be able go to a digital crosspoint switch that could be left alone for a year or so.
