Some string synths used a top octave chip and a single filter bank for all the voices.  The challenge was making an array of inexpensive vca+envelope circuits for n number of voices, and perhaps extra octave dividers for more tonal effects.
But vcos for each voice of a string synth approaches the cost and complexity of any polyphonic analog synth without adding any features you would not already expect.
