By the way, I designed my first USB-MIDI hardware before I had the budget for a USB Analyzer. It works perfectly.
On big advantage here is the support that Mac OS X has for USB. I used "USB Prober.app" extensively, as well as the OS support for USB debugging. Speaking of "ignoring" the lower levels, I was blissfully unaware of the data flowing across the USB for my Device. There were tons of features (some beyond USB-MIDI) and they worked seamlessly together.
Since then, I purchased a Beagle USB analyzer from Total Phase. They're expensive, but they work well. You might not need to invest that much money, though. Prior to that purchase, I sometimes borrowed client's USB analyzers. If you get into USB development, you might think about renting or borrowing, or just using macOS USB debugging capabilities.
I've definitely needed the USB analyzer for some USB product design.

So, it's often beneficial to study the other layers of USB - at least enough to get a basic understanding of how it works - and this extra knowledge will help you figure out the unwritten details that USB expert specification writers assume you already know.
