If I remember correctly, it was similar arguments that were being used for the Batteriser. Which was just a step-up DC/DC converter on top of the battery clip. So you throw away 20% efficiency or so right there.

Joule thiefs (and variants) are not very impressive: Modern LEDs will light up even at 1 mA, 2 V, which is 2 mW. Let’s say in your case it was lit for 5 hours, so the total energy during that time is 5 * 3600 * 0.002 = 36 J. A new AA battery has about 10000 J, so those 5 hours only amount to 1/277 of the initial battery capacity.
