When I was younger and just getting into electronic music I designed and
built my own 24-channel mixer with stereo outputs, 4 channel EQ on each
channel, mic pre-amps, insertion points, pre- and post-fade FX sends,
aux/tape returns, mute/solo switching etc. I naively thought it would
be cheap to do! It was a pain making the enclosure (from wood!), took
ages to solder up all the electronics (mostly on veroboard with lots of
flying leads to the pots and switches!!!), and ended up being waaaaaay
more expensive than I had imagined.

It also picked up numerous European Short-Wave radio stations at night,
buzzed every time the heating switched on or off, and always had at
least 2 channels with intermittent faults due to poor soldering at any
one time!

It looked pretty cool, and I was happy from an achievement point of view
(was easily satisfied in those days ;-)) but I was forever opening it
up to fix stuff, and definitely wouldn't embark on anything like that
again!
